Cardiff School of Mathematics is a research-led School in Cardiff University, one of the UK’s leading universities, with a reputation for internationally excellent research and high quality teaching.
The School offers a range of undergraduate (BSc, MMath) and Postgraduate taught (MSc) degrees in:

- Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research
- Operational Research and Applied Statistics
- Operational Research, Applied Statistics and Risk
Our undergraduate degrees are accredited by the IMA (Institute of Mathematics and its Applications). The School also offers a wide range of joint honours degrees.
We also offer a wide range of opportunities for postgraduate study leading to a PhD.
The School currently has over 500 undergraduate students and over 60 postgraduate students. The School is committed to supporting all students to fulfil their academic potential through the provision of high quality teaching, supervision, pastoral care and learning opportunities. Our courses are designed to challenge and to stimulate academic curiosity.
The School has a strong professional development programmes in which undergraduate students at the end of their second academic year can opt to take a 12-month period of training in a mathematics environment in industry, commerce or government. These programmes play a significant role in bringing high quality undergraduates to Cardiff and preparing our graduates for fulfilling careers. There are also opportunities to spend a year studying abroad. All students on our MSc programmes spend 3 months in industry applying their mathematical knowledge to practical problems. Our strong links with commerce, industry and government ensure that our graduates are highly valued.
The School has five main research groups: Analysis and Differential Equations, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Physics, Operational Research and Statistics. We are an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research in the mathematical sciences and were ranked 8th in the UK for ‘Research Power’ for Pure Mathematics in RAE 2008. The School engages with industry, young people and the wider community to make our innovative research accessible to a wider audience. The School has a long-standing culture of applied research and direct engagement with a wide range of industrial, government and commercial organisations such as the NHS, HP and the Office for National Statistics.
